What to check before you buy here

An island and a coastal town come with questions an inland home doesn't.

  1. Flood zone. Look up the address on the FEMA flood map before you tour. It changes your insurance cost.
  2. Insurance quote. Get a homeowners and wind quote before you make an offer, not after.
  3. Elevation and age of the home. Both affect insurance and what an inspector looks for.
  4. HOA rules. Many communities limit rentals, boats, fences and exterior changes.
  5. Short-term rental rules. Check city and county rules if you plan to rent the home.
